Start a new chapter at the LGBT reading group

Fancy starting a new chapter in life? Well you can certainly turn a page by joining the LGBT reading group.

This engaging group is anything but dull and is a great opportunity to meet and engage with new people whilst discussing and exploring literature that has elements of LGBT.

A message from our very own Customer Service Officer, Rachel Burgin who is the brains behind this exciting new group:

“I initially wanted to start up a reading group within the social housing sector. After a meeting with the charity Stonewall and after reading up on some very interesting stats on the experiences of LGBT tenants within the social housing sector, I decided to make my reading group LGBT focussed and open it up to the whole LGBT community of Gloucestershire.

The group will be focusing on literature that contains a thread of LGBT running through the text, whether it be the character, The Author or a particular social setting or time. It could also be what is implied and/or not spoken about.

At the moment we are currently reading ‘Carol’ by Patricia Highsmith and our next choice will be ‘A Single Man’ by Christopher Isherwood.

The group is still very new and I still need to drum up more interest. I am part of the LGBT partnership and they have been very supportive with all my endeavours. I have had support from CBH, CBC and The University of Gloucestershire and The University of Bristol.”

If you fancy a change of scenery or a break from everyday life then this could be the group for you!

The reading group will also be supporting the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) next month and is encouraging everyone to come along and take part in the group.
