Applications open for new homes for veterans

apply-nowThe online adverts are live and forces veterans can now apply for one of the new council homes being built at the former commercial site on Swindon Road.

The scheme which will deliver 10 new homes; five 1 bed flats, three 2 bed flats and two 2 bed houses, is near completion and in a move, the first of its kind for Cheltenham, the new council owned homes will be offered first to veterans and their families.

The first new homes are being advertised for rent online at www.homeseekerplus.co.uk. Interest in the properties has been really positive and we have been in contact with a number of potential tenants however we are still urging all forces veterans who think they might be eligible to apply.

Councillor Peter Jeffries, Cheltenham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Housing, who served in the armed forces for three years, said: “I know only too well the difficulties facing services personnel entering back into civilian life, after such a disciplined and regimented lifestyle.

“This can be further complicated if they are recovering after being wounded or even living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder so being able to offer accommodation where there are fellow ex-comrades gives a new dimension to peer support. This is proving to be a successful means of settling veterans back into life after serving their country.

He added:

“We’re honoured to be able to show that Cheltenham is supporting our veterans and I want to encourage any veteran who thinks they might be eligible to apply for one of these fantastic new homes and join our community.”

Based near the town centre with easy access to support networks, the new properties are being built to be adaptable, lifetime homes and have been designed to encourage a feeling of community.

We are building the Swindon Road housing scheme in collaboration with Cheltenham Borough Council. Once completed the scheme will deliver 10 new homes; five 1 bed flats, three 2 bed flats and two 2 bed houses.

Properties are being built in partnership with J Harper and Sons Limited (Leominster) and PMP Consultants. The development is due for completion in February 2017.

There are no time restrictions for how long a veteran needs to have served in the armed forces in order to be considered for these homes.

If you’re a veteran and you’re interested in being considered for one of these homes please contact the CBH Housing Options Team on  HousingRegister@cheltenham.gov.uk or in person at Cheltenham First Stop, 301-305 Cheltenham High Street, GL50 3HW. Applicants can register their interest online through Homeseeker Plus at www.homeseekerplus.co.uk
